Requirements for studying in Germany are
- Secondary schooling diploma corresponding to the German „Abitur“
- Proof of sufficient German knowledge* (passing German proficiency test at highest levels (DSH level 2 minimum, TestDaF at least level 4)
- the offical invitation letter of an acknowledged language school (like KÄSTNER KOLLEG)
* What counts here is the start date of the planned study. Therefore, you could apply to university while possessing a basic A2 level of German proficiency if you demonstrate that you will have obtained the required level by the beginning of the actual studies. For example, if you register for German classes at a recognized language school, like Kästner Kolleg. More info here (see below)
Steps for Studying at a German University
- Request an application form from the University of your choice (-> Download from their website or request by mail)
- Once accepted, you will receive an applicant’s confirmation (important for applying for the visa!)
- Register for a German course at Kästner (the confirmation is important for visa application!)
- Apply for a student visa at the German embassy in your home country.
- Organize arrival details, housing and course start date with Kästner Kolleg

The processing time is from 3 to 12 weeks.
TIP
If your educational background does not directly correspond to adequate prerequisite levels for studying in Germany, it is also possible to attain qualifications by attending a Preparatory College.

Consultation-Service from Kästner Kolleg
We will gladly carry out for you Steps 1 -3 (see above). You must send us all forms officially accredited as well as a letter of motivation stating your reason for wishing to study. Your application will then be processed by the Office of Foreign Academics withing 3 to 12 weeks during the matriculation period.
The study place reservation will be sent to you along with our confirmation of registration at our language school, and then no further obstacles stand between you and your application for a visa.
We charge a fee of just €100 for this service.
Visa-Service Kästner Kolleg
Unless you are a citizen of the EU or Andorra, Australia, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland or the USA, you will need a Study Applicant Visa.
To apply for this visa you will need our confirmation for your booked course and accommodation. You receive this after you have registered for your course and we receive payment transferred to our bank account. After receipt of payment we will send a payment confirmation and a written invitation, both which you will need to turn in with your visa application at the appropriate embassy.
TIP
Expect a waiting period of up to 3 months. In urgent cases and with
a small fee we can send the papers by express post (e.g. by DHL).
Problems with visa, or denied visa applications
Please notify us immediately if there is a delay in your visa application.
We could try to get in contact with the appropriate offices to expediate the
process.
If your application should be rejected, we can postpone your course reservation
at no charge. If that is not possible or wished, we will refund the
complete balance minus bank fees and a registration fee of 150 EU.
Study degrees
Diplom
4 to 5 year study that combines a basis study of the subject with a major subject. The final semester has a thesis and final exam. Traditional degree in Sciences and Engineering.
Magister Artium
Similar in structure and length to a diploma study, common in Humanities and Social Studies. However there are 2 majors and 2 minors. Last semester includes a thesis and final exam.
Staatsexamen
State Final Exam for teachers, lawyers and doctors. There is a primary exam at the end of the first study segment, and a second final exam after a practical segment.
Bachelor and Master
Bachelor degree is a professionally qualified degree after 3 years of study. The Master degree comes after another 1 to 2 years and a thesis.
Note
Diplom, Magister, Staatsexamen and Master are academically equivalent degrees that entitle the student to graduation.
